Winning

Winning tournaments is really emphasized here in Hawaii and it's really intimidating. Aren't there much more important things? I never won and because of that, like so many others, I've thought about quitting.

Answer: I am so sorry for my delayed reply.

I understand how you feel. Kendo in many places has a strong tournament culture, including in Japan, and it can be intimidating when winning seems to be the main focus. But let me tell you something—kendo is much more than tournaments.

Kendo is about self-improvement, perseverance, and lifelong learning. Many great kenshi never won big tournaments, yet they became incredible practitioners and inspiring teachers. Your value in kendo is not defined by trophies, but by your growth, spirit, and dedication.

Instead of focusing on winning, shift your mindset to competing against yourself. Are you improving? Are you pushing yourself to be better than yesterday? If so, you are already winning in the most important way.

Don’t quit because of what others are telling you. Keep training, enjoy the journey, and you’ll find deeper meaning in kendo beyond competition. 😊

Hope this helps!
