Washing kendo bogu after using it for some time

by Mark Soo

Hello Imafuji sensei,

I'd like to thank you for the site that you have and answering my questions. It's been very helpful and now I'm doing training with the bogu on.

I'd been reading up information on the internet that the bogu can be washed, but carefully because it can damage the materials. I heard from one side that a bit of hydrogen peroxide with some water mixed is a solution before drying it.

Are there any suggestions that I can use to wash it and remove the eventual bad smell when it comes to that?

Answer: Thank you for your question and kind words! I am glad to hear that my site has been helpful.

I personally don’t wash my bogu so I am not too sure what you can do with it. There are some bogu cleaning service in Japan but they are professionals and I don’t know what they really do.

The first thing you should do is to keep your bogu dry with a good ventilation after training. Having an extra kote and/men is also good idea so you can dry another pair completely. You can keep your bogu longer this way.

You probably should go to a bogu shop like www.shogunkendogu.com and ask if it is a good idea to wash your bogu.

If your bogu has leather parts, then I don’t think you should wash them at all but that is my opinion.

Hope this helps!
