Studies Related to Head Injuries in Kendo

There have been a lot of news reports recently about head injuries in sports. It's long been known that the repeated blows received by boxers cause long-term damage to the brain.

Recently, researchers have been studying head injuries in football and soccer - not just concussions but the effects of "headers" in soccer.

Are there any scientific studies that looked at head injuries in kendo or the effect of men strikes, long-term, on the brain of practitioners?

Answer: Thanks for your question. Not that I know of. What I am going to write here is through my experience and my personal opinion so please do not think it as an “official” comment on your question.

I would not be surprised if there are some kinds of effects on our brain through getting hit on our men. But I have never heard of such serious damages to the brain in kendo like other sports like boxing and American football.

It is true that sometimes you can have a bit of concussion when someone hit your head really hard. But it is only sometimes. Eventually people learn how to hit properly so it does not hurt much.

Kendo is relatively safe. But please remember it is still full contact. You may get hurt by getting hit. And also you should remember you might hit others really hard and hurt them. This is why we need to improve our skills.

Hope this helps.
