Shinai strike.

I have practice iaido for a year and want to take up kendo. Do I hold and strike with a shinai like I would do with a katana or bokken? Furthermore would I have any problem learning kendo because I have practiced iaido?

Thank you in advance.

Answer: Thank you for your question. There are some differences regarding how to cut in keddo. How to hold shinai is pretty much the same as iaido. Just a bit of adjustment.

There are many people who do the both so you should not have a problem. In general and through my experience, those who iai longer than kendo are a bit stiff. You just have to learn how to smoothen your movements for kendo. But it will help your iaido too.

It all depends on you. Iaido and kendo go together if you can adjust some movements.

Hope this helps.
