You don't have to be afraid. In the dojo, where I am, there are more younger children (around 9-11 years old) and they started Kendo. There's a Hungarian mate, who started around your age and he's quite the same age as me (I'm 27-years-old and 1st dan), and he's 4th Dan. If you start from earlier, you'll reach the higher level you want.
And like Joe said, don't be afraid. At first you'll have your adrenaline at the height from the first ji geiko (training match), but you'll get used to it in no time. The Sensei (Teacher) will be sure to instruct you well first with the basic movements and the basic attacks, and then later you'll get used to everything during your Kendo journey.
Trust me. :)
Good luck to it!

Don't Be Afraid by: Joe
The people in the dojo all started at the beginning.
They were probably nervous about starting kendo, too. Your sensei will make sure that you are welcomed, that you are given proper instruction, and that you are treated with the same respect that everyone else in the dojo receives.
Just remember, kendo is not about a destination, it's about the journey along the way. Some take a fast trip, others take a more deliberate trip, but we all travel at our own speeds.
Take that first step out onto the dojo floor, you will probably take many more steps after that.
Kendo is fun! Kendo is enjoyable! Adults beginners and late starters of kendo have hard time to understand that. If you are one of them, I want to help you with learning kendo and share the enjoyment and joy of kendo! Click here to know about me and Kendo-Guide.Com.
