Sorry if this question is frequently asked, but how long should I practice Kendo before attending 4-kyus tests?

I started praticing Kendo not long ago, in the Dojo where I learn, there's a test for 9 to 4-kyus Kendokas, the purpose for this test is testing if I could wear Bogu. This is the content.

A. 素振りSuburi
* Zenshinkotai shomenuchi : 3 times
* Zenshinkotai Koteuchi : 3 times
B. 基本 Kihon waza
* Men : 2 times
* Kote : 2 times
* Do: 2 times
C. 打ち込み稽古 Uchikomi geiko
* Men : 2 times
* Kote : 2 times
* Kote-Men : 2 times

With these contents in mind, how long do you think should I practice before attending the test?

Thank you!

Answer Sorry for my late response.

Your question is totally valid, and it’s great that you’re thinking ahead about your progress in kendo! Since your dojo’s 4-kyu test determines whether you can start wearing bogu, it’s crucial to be well-prepared.

How long should you practice before testing?

It depends on how often you train and your ability to perform the required techniques with good form.

Every federation/dojo has their own criteria. So, I cannot speak for all. But if the test is to determin if you can put a bogu on, then you should be able to do them nice and big with the good posture.

Here is a list of general ideas ofwhat you should focus on.
1. Stable Posture & Proper Footwork – Your movements should be balanced and controlled.
2. Big, Clean Strikes – Make sure your suburi and kihon waza have full swings and proper kiai.
3. Smooth & Confident Execution – Even if you make mistakes, show strong spirit and commitment in each strike.
4. Proper Ki Ken Tai Icchi – Your strike, footwork, and kiai should be in sync.

If your sensei hasn’t mentioned a specific timeline, I recommend discussing it with them. They’ll know best whether you’re ready or if there’s anything to improve before taking the test.

Keep training with patience and dedication—you’ll get there! 💪😊
