Are there any cultural things I should know?

I’m 14 and my friend and I are going to try out kendo and we are wondering if there are any cultural traditions that we should know about. Thanks.


Answer: Thank you for your question and the kendō community is very happy to know that you are interested in kendō!

I am assuming that you are going to a dōjō to learn. If so, don’t worry about it. Your instructor and other senior students will teach you these traditions.

These traditions are Japanese traditions, but it does not mean all the Japanese knows about them because what we do is related to samurai tradition.

Anyway, follow their instructions. If you want to get a book about kendō and its history, Kendo by Alex Bennett is strongly recommended.
